What it is
The Lumber Price Tracker & Estimator aggregates the cost of individual lumber pieces into a single material budget. It uses pre‑baked prices for common board sizes and species, allowing users to select each type and quantity. The calculator then computes the raw purchase amount by multiplying each selected price per board by its quantity, summing across all types. A waste or safety factor—expressed as a percentage—is applied to cover cuts, shipping, off‑cuts or an engineering margin. Finally, the tool adds this surcharge to deliver a realistic overall estimate that construction professionals can use for quoting, budgeting or comparing suppliers.
How to use it
Choose a board type for each column; the dropdown lists include price per whole board. Enter how many boards you plan to order in the quantity field. In the percentage box, type your desired waste or safety margin (e.g., 12%). The calculator instantly shows the raw subtotal, the surcharge amount in dollars, and the final estimate including waste. These figures can be copied into a quote template or spreadsheet for further analysis.
Worked example
You select "Pine (2x4 x8ft) – $10" and enter 5 boards, and “Hardwood (2x6 x10ft) – $20” with 3 boards. Compute the raw subtotal: - Pine: 5 boards × $10 / board = $50 - Hardwood: 3 boards × $20 / board = $60 Sum = $110. Next add a 15 % waste margin: $110 × 0.15 = $16.50 . Add to get the final estimate: $110 + $16.50 = $126.50. All figures are shown in U.S. dollars with three decimal places.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use this for custom board sizes?
The calculator uses fixed prices baked into option drops; it does not support arbitrary dimensions. If you need a custom estimate, consult your local supplier or adjust the price manually based on similar standard types.
How often are the pricing tables updated?
Prices reflect publicly available retail data from major suppliers and are refreshed bi‑annually to keep them reasonably accurate. For precise quoting, verify with your chosen vendor before finalizing a bid.
What does the waste percentage cover?
It accounts for off‑cuts, misalignments, shipping loss or an extra engineering safety margin. Typical values range from 5 % for straight cuts to 15–20 % when many angled pieces are cut.
