This tool computes the exact total flux (lumens) needed for every plant set you plan to grow, using a species‑specific base value multiplied by a growth multiplier, then scaled linearly with depth. The resulting figure reflects the cumulative lighting intensity every plant must receive for optimal photosynthesis, giving aquascapers clear guidance on power and fixture choice.
It matters because under‑lit tanks produce sluggish growth while over‑illuminated systems waste energy, damage corals or skews plant morphology. How to use it
1. Select the aquascape’s maximum water depth from 0 m upward. 2. Pick the plant species group that best matches your collection; the numbers next to each option represent its baseline lumens per plant at 1 m of water. 3. Choose the current growth stage—seedlings need less light, while mature or blooming plants demand more. 4. Enter how many such plants you’ll have in the tank; negative values are not allowed, zero is acceptable if you’re testing calculations only. 5. Provide a realistic LED efficiency (lm / W) according to your lighting equipment’s spec sheet.
Once all fields contain valid numbers, the calculator automatically displays the total lumen output required for the whole aquarium and the equivalent electrical power in watts. Use this figure to size lamp arrays or plan supplemental grow‑light setups.
Worked example
For this example the tank is 0.60 m deep, contains 10 tall ferns in their juvenile stage (growth multiplier 1), and uses LED fixtures rated at 120 lm/W.
Step 1 – Base lumens per plant: 1200 lm × 1 = 1200 lm. Step 2 – Depth factor: 1 + (0.60 / 0.5) = 2.20. Step 3 – Per‑plant requirement: 1200 × 2.20 = 2640 lm needed per fern. Step 4 – Total lumens for all ferns: 2640 × 10 = 26,400 lm.
