What it is
The IBU calculator precisely quantifies the bitterness of a beer by leveraging the Tinseth utilization model, one of the most widely adopted formulas in homebrewing. It requires the hop mass, alpha‑acid percentage, boil duration, wort temperature and final volume to compute how much soluble iso‑alpha acid enters the boil and survives to the finished beer. How to use it
Enter your hop weight in grams and its alpha‐acid percentage. Input the total minutes you left the hops in the boil and measure the wort temperature at the start of that period. Frequently asked questions
Why does temperature affect hop utilization?
Higher wort temperatures accelerate isomerization of alpha acids, increasing early extraction but also causing rapid escape if the boil too hot; Tinseth’s formula captures this by reducing utilization as temperature rises above 68 °F (20 °C).
Can I use this calculator for dry‑hop bitterness?
No. The model is calibrated for boiling additions only. For dry hops, a separate extraction factor (typically 0.02–0.07 of the hop mass) should be applied before converting to IBUs.
